Toenails are often ignored apart from trimming now and then. They are among the uninteresting parts of the human body. Likely, they don’t get that much attention unless it experiences a problem. Apart from the usual bruises and bumps, the most common issue that people experience with their toenails is the nail fungal infection. We all coexist with various microorganisms which include fungi and yeast. Some of these microorganisms tend to overgrow, causing an infection and bringing about several symptoms from itching to foul odor like what happens with a toenail fungal infection.
6What causes a toenail fungal infection?
The most common cause of nail fungus infection is dermatophyte. Yeast and molds can also cause the condition. Nail fungal infection may develop in people of any age, but it is more common among older adults. As people age, the nails become drier and more brittle, becoming more susceptible to cracks that enable fungi to enter the body. Reduced blood circulation and a weakened immune system contribute to nail fungus infection as well. This may also start from the athlete’s foot that spreads to the nails. It can infect more than one toenail.
