Toenail fungus infection is a common condition, but it is difficult to eliminate. It is said that around 10 percent of the adult population is affected by it. In many cases, the infection stays longer than expected. That’s why when you notice that the toenail becomes thick and its color becomes yellow or white you must be concerned about it. This infection is more common in toenails than fingernails. The technical name for this condition is onychomycosis.
4Treatment
Treating nail fungus infection can take a long time, and it can be expensive too. You may choose from the following forms: topical ointments and creams, prescription antifungal medications, and alternative treatments. The following are some examples of the oral medications often prescribed for toenail fungus infection: terbinafine (Lamisil), fluconazole (Diflucan), and itraconazole (Sporanox). Apart from these, some creams and ointments can be bought over the counter. Treatment often takes up to 4 months, the time when a new nail replaces the infected one. In some extreme cases, the doctor will recommend removing the entire infected nail.
