Toenail fungus is also known as onychomycosis. It is an infection that occurs underneath the nail which is caused by fungi. When an overgrowth of any of these microorganisms occurs that’s when the infection happens. It is easy to ignore since the condition does not cause any pain.
Toenail fungus infection is contagious. You can get it from an infected person or an infected surface. Nail fungus can also affect the fingernails but is more prevalent on toenails. Older men are also more prone to this.
6Causes of the Infection
The most common group of fungus that causes this condition is called dermatophytes. Nail fungus may also be caused by yeasts and molds. Some habits and conditions may also increase the risk of becoming infected. These include having diabetes, a weakened immune system, a blood circulation disorder, a nail injury, walking barefoot in places like public pools and showers, wearing tight shoes, and sharing personal items like nail clippers.
