Fungal infections not only affect the nail but various parts of the body. These fungi often survive along with bacteria all over the body. Infection sets in when there is an overgrowth of fungus in any part of the body. The medical term for nail fungus infection is onychomycosis. It is also known as tinea unguium. It is a nail fungus infection that attacks the fingernails or toenails. Fungal infections are likely to develop over time. This is why any slight changes to the appearance and sensations caused by the fungus infection may not be noticed at first.
6How the Fungus Develops
Fungal nail infection may develop from the overgrowth of fungi in, under, or on the nail. Fungi thrive in warm and moist environments. This type of environment makes them overpopulate. The fungi that cause nail infection are also the cause of jock itch, ringworm, and athlete’s foot. The fungi that can be found in your body can cause nail infections. If you were in contact with someone else, there’s a chance that you may have contracted the infection as well. Nail fungus affects toenails more than fingernails. This is probably because your toes are often confined in shoes. It may also develop when you use tools in salons that have not been disinfected. Emery boards and nail clippers can easily spread the fungus when they are not sanitized.
