Onychomycosis is an infection of the nail bed and the nail plate. This is caused by several types of fungi which can be found commonly in the environment. Fungi are parasitic plant organisms such as molds and mildews that don’t contain chlorophyll. They don’t require sunlight to thrive. A group of organisms called dermatophytes can attack the nails, same as yeasts and molds.
