Fungal nail infection is a common condition of the nails that can make them brittle, crumbly, and discolored. This condition usually occurs on the toenails compared to the fingernails. The formal name for this condition is onychomycosis. It looks similar to an athlete’s foot. However, instead of affecting the skin in between the toes and the bottom of the feet, it affects the toenails.

Fungi are microorganisms that can only be seen through a microscope. Different types of fungi can cause an infection. Oftentimes, they thrive on the skin and exist silently. But if there is an overgrowth in one area, this may lead to an infection. The most common group of fungi that causes nail fungus infection is dermatophytes. Nail infections may also be caused by yeasts and molds.
