Nail fungus infection is a common health condition, which others often consider a cosmetic problem. Most people who have it don’t look for treatment. They may not even recognize its existence in the first place. One of the main reasons for this is that the infection does not cause pain. It becomes more prevalent among older adults. A toenail fungus infection occurs underneath the nail. This fungus can easily penetrate the nail. This can be accompanied by a secondary bacterial and/or yeast infection which occurs in or around the nail plate.
6What are the causes of nail fungus infections?
Nail fungus or onychomycosis is an infection of the nail plate and nail bed found underneath the nail. This infection is caused by several types of fungi that are usually found in the environment. Fungi are parasitic plant organisms that do not have chlorophyll and thus don’t require sunlight to thrive. A group of fungi known as dermatophytes attacks the nail. Dermatophytes feed off keratin which is the nail’s protein substance, making it hard.
