Nail fungus is a fungal infection that has become widespread. It affects both the fingernails and toenails although it is more prevalent on the toenails. It is medically known as onychomycosis. Toenail fungus occurs when the fungi settle in between the nail and the nail bed, the tissue under the toenail. This often happens through the crack or cut found in the toe. It is a common condition, particularly among older adults. It affects 50 percent of the population who are 70 years old and older.

4What does the infected nail look like?

Nail fungus may change the appearance of your nails in many ways. The toenails may have the following changes: discoloration with the nail turning yellow, green, white, or brown, the nail appearing chalky and cloudy, it is also thickened and misshapen, the nail may set off the nail bed, and having a crack or break in one or more spots on the nail.
