Nail fungus is a fungal infection that has become widespread. It affects both the fingernails and toenails although it is more prevalent on the toenails. It is medically known as onychomycosis. Toenail fungus occurs when the fungi settle in between the nail and the nail bed, the tissue under the toenail. This often happens through the crack or cut found in the toe. It is a common condition, particularly among older adults. It affects 50 percent of the population who are 70 years old and older.
5What causes toenail fungal infections?
Toenail fungal infections can be caused by more than one type of fungi. Most of them are caused by a group of fungi known as dermatophytes. These are microorganisms that cannot be seen by the naked eye. Fungus feeds off keratin, a protein found in the nails. It is what makes the nails hard.
