Nail fungus or onychomycosis is the most common condition that affects the nails. This causes changes to the appearance of the nail. Fungal infections appear under the fingernails or toenails. This infection is a result of the fungus that spread due to the warm and moist environment like the inside of a shoe or the shower floor.

Most often the first sign of the fungal infection is the appearance of a white or yellow spot found underneath the nail. When the infection is left as is, this may result in thickened, brittle, and crumbly nails. The nail may also separate from the nail bed. This is a condition known as onycholysis. The nail bed may also end up permanently damaged. Nail fungal infections can be contagious, and this can spread to several nails and even the nearby skin.

Symptoms of Nail Fungus

The first set of symptoms often occurs as an abnormal appearance of the nail. This may then cause pain and discomfort later on. The following symptoms are also common: nail thickening and darkening, distorted nail shape, dull nails, the nail may emit a foul smell, pain coming from the fingernail or toenail, and others.

Possible Complications

A nail fungal infection may cause complications when the person has diabetes or a weakened immune system. It’s the same thing with those who have AIDS, leukemia, and other forms of cancers, and also people who have undergone organ transplants.

Treatments

Usually, over-the-counter medications can be used to get rid of nail fungus. However, in more persistent cases of nail fungus, more powerful antifungal medications may be prescribed by the doctor. This can be in oral or topical form. The nail fungus treatment is dependent on the microorganism that caused the infection and how severe the infection is.

5All about the Brazilian Pepper Tree

The Brazilian pepper tree is known by many other common names such as rose pepper, Florida holly, broadleaved pepper tree, Christmas berry, Brazilian pepper tree, Japanese pepper, South American pepper, and Christmas berry tree, among others.

It’s a small tree or a sprawling shrub that belongs to the Anacardiaceae family. This is also the family that includes poison sumac, poison ivy, poisonwood, and poison oak. This shrub is native to subtropical and tropical regions of South America, such as northern Argentina, Paraguay, and southeastern Brazil.

It is known as a pepper tree although it is not really a true pepper. It is also known as Florida Holly or Hawaiian Christmas Berry due to its red berries that usually mature in January or December. These are also used as Christmas decorations sometimes.

Cultivation and Uses

The Brazilian pepper is cultivated as an ornamental plant because of its foliage and fruit. Its seeds can be used as a spice, providing a pepper-like taste to food. These seeds are often sold dry, and they have a pink hue. At times, the seeds are sold in pickled form using brine. In this case, the seeds become green.
