Toenail fungus is medically called onychomycosis. This is a chronic fungal infection that affects the fingernails and toenails mostly caused by dermatophytes. This infection may also be caused by yeast and molds which eventually result in the gradual destruction of the nail plate. It is more likely to affect your toenails particularly the first one, compared to the fingernails. This is according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Nail fungal infection is so common. It affects half of the population of people who are aged 70 years old. U.S. National Library of Medicine stated that 50 percent of all nail disease is caused by fungus.

5What does a nail fungal infection look like?

It is common for the infected nail to have ugly-looking orange/brown or white/yellow streaks or patches. The nail can become crumbly, brittle, ragged, dull, and ragged. There are some cases when the nail will give off a foul smell. The infected nail may also separate from the nail bed in a process called onycholysis. It’s more common for people to want to treat them because of their unsightly appearance, but the nails may become friable, break up, easily, and fall off completely. Once the nail has thickened, it may be hard to clip it. It may also cause discomfort as the nail catches on the clothes for instance or it may cause pain when pressure is applied to it.
