Nail fungal infections affect both the fingernails and toenails, but it is more prevalent on toenails. It may sometimes start on the nail’s edges and spread to the middle. This makes the nail discolored and thick in some parts which makes it hard to trim. The nail can become brittle and pieces may fall off. The whole nail may also separate from the nail bed. This may lead to pain and swelling in the surrounding skin. In some cases, it is accompanied by a foul smell.
