Toenail fungus goes by the name onychomycosis. It is an infection that occurs on both fingernails and toenails and is caused by fungi and yeast. It comprises over 50 percent of all nail disorders. The most common form of nail fungus infection is caused by debris that grows underneath the nail and spreads to the fingers, nail bed, and even the grooves found on the sides of the nails.
5What signs and symptoms show toenail fungal infections?
Toenails are more easily infected with toenail fungus as opposed to fingernails. Once the fingernails are infected, the toenails are usually infected too. Nails thicken and lift off the nail bed starting at the growing part of the nail. Debris may be seen underneath the nail and discoloration of the nail may be visible. In some cases, the nail may have black, white, or a powdery discoloration of the nail’s surface. It is also possible to notice abnormal changes farther up to the area where the nail starts. Nail fungus may affect one, a couple, or all toenails or fingernails.
