When you notice a thick, brown, yellow, or black toenail that is painful, chances are you suffering from a nail fungus infection. The major concern about this infection is that it takes a long time for this to be eliminated, and it won’t go away when left on its own. Nail fungus infection is a common condition, especially among older people. As the nails become dry and brittle, they tend to develop cracks that serve as entry points for fungus. Nail fungus infection happens when an excessive amount of moisture gets underneath the toenails and it is trapped there by your shoes or socks. The moisture allows the fungus to thrive. Toenail infection may also be caused by yeast and mold.

5Treatments of Toenail Fungus Infection

You can eliminate toenail fungus infection by taking oral antifungal pills. For worse infections, you may be asked to undergo nail avulsion which requires surgically removing the infected nail or a portion of it. You may also opt to use topical nail fungus treatment like a medicated nail lacquer or nail cream, but you have to trim the infected nail first for it to penetrate the nail bed where the fungus is.

It is important for nail fungus infection to be treated or else it may spread to other nails and even to the surrounding skin and other parts of the body. It may also lead to complications such as abscess on the toe as well as cellulitis or bacterial infection that has symptoms of swelling, tender skin, and redness.
