Fingernail or toenail infections may be caused by bacteria, fungus, and viruses. But the most common infections are caused by fungi. The fungus gets into the nail through the small cracks found in the nail and the surrounding skin. This nail fungal infection is also known as onychomycosis.

Fingernail and toenail infections may occur in a child when he or she bites or chews their own fingernails or toenails. Toenail infections may also happen once the child has an ingrown toenail. This is the condition when the toenails pierce the skin that surrounds them, making it easier for bacteria to get through the skin.

Common Symptoms

Nail fungal infections can make the nail thick, crumbly, and discolored. Often the nail becomes white or yellow, but it may also become green or black. The infection spreads slowly and most of the time it is painless. If this affects the feet, its skin may develop a scaly rash. The fungus affects toenails more than fingernails.

Treatment for Nail Fungal Infections

When it comes to fungal nail infections, the general practitioner often prescribes antifungal tablets, creams, or solutions. The doctor may get a nail clipping before the nail fungus treatment commences. This is to make sure if the fungus will respond to treatment.

If there is pus surrounding the nail, the child may have to take oral antibiotics. The doctor may have to drain the pus from the infected area. Always make sure that the infected area is clean. Also, cover the infected area with a basic dressing that can be bought from the pharmacy.

Prevention

Some steps can be done to prevent nail fungal infection. These include biting or pulling off broken nails or hanging ones, sucking the fingers or toes, trimming too hard or too close, and drying the hands and feet all the time.

5A Home Remedy for Treating Nail Fungus

For you to save money when treating a nail fungal infection, home remedies are available. This is particularly true when it comes to mild cases of infection. One of these home remedies that are easy to do is to bathe in water infused with neem leaves and turmeric powder.
