Nail fungus infections are known as onychomycosis to doctors. This condition affects both toenails and fingernails, but it is more common on toenails. It becomes more prevalent among male adults and rarely affects children.

5What are its causes and risks?

Nail fungus problems are caused by an overgrowth of fungus that spreads from the nail to the nail bed. Various types of fungi can cause the infection, the most common of which are dermatophytes followed by yeasts and molds. The infection may start from a broken, cracked, or injured nail and it may spread to the skin as an athlete’s foot.

The fungus can be picked up by walking in damp public areas such as pools, locker rooms, and showers. The fungus may also be transferred from one person to another and through contact with an infected surface.
