Nail infection is often caused by a fungus. The infection can affect the toenails and fingernails, although it is more prevalent on the former. Another name for this nail infection is onychomycosis. Anyone can get infected with toenail fungus, but it is more common among those who are above 60 years old. It is also more prevalent among men than women.

5What are the usual symptoms?

Nail fungus can change the appearance of the nails in several ways such as making it discolored or usually white, yellow, or brown; being brittle to the touch; being crumbly and having rough edges; thickened and distorted in shape, being curled up or down; oftentimes separating from the nail bed. Toenail fungus infection may not be painful; but when it is left untreated, it can cause pain and discomfort. There are cases when it emits a foul smell as well.
