Fungal infections can happen in any part of the body. Fungi can be found normally in, on, and alongside different bacteria. The infection starts when the fungi overgrow. Toenail fungus or onychomycosis is also known as tinea unguium. It is a fungal infection that affects the toenails or fingernails. Fungal infections often develop over time, so at first, you may not notice the slight changes to the appearance of your nails.
The common signs of toenail fungus infection include a distorted nail that appears to be lifted from the nail bed, thickened or brittle nail, and an odor that originates from the infected nail.
