Toenail fungus infections are a common infection that often starts in the cuticle area. It is medically known as onychomycosis. This begins with some common symptoms such as yellowing or thickening of the nails and becoming brittle. When the infection is left untreated, chances are this will lead to inflammation, pain, and swelling of the toes. There is a rise in cases of toenail fungal infections, and this is caused by the increase of people who suffer from diabetes and poor immunity. This may also be brought about by the increase in the number of aging individuals.

6What organisms cause toenail fungal infections?

Several organisms lead to toenail fungal infections. These include dermatophytes which cause 70 percent of cases, Epidermophyton spp. and Microsporum spp., yeast causes 8 percent of the infections and some non-dermatophyte molds which cause 3 to 5 percent of nail infections.
