Nail fungal infections are also called dermatophytic onychomycosis or tinea unguium. The fungus that is responsible for the infection is similar to the fungus that causes the athlete’s foot. The most common type of fungus that causes nail fungus infection is the dermatophytes though this may also be caused by yeast and molds.
5What Does It Look Like?
At first, you may not notice the symptoms. Later on, the nails may become thick and difficult to trim. They may also be distorted in shape. They may have ragged edges, and they can become brittle and crumbly. The nails also become yellow, white, green, or brown. In some cases, the nails can become painful and smelly.
