Nail fungal infections are also called dermatophytic onychomycosis or tinea unguium. The fungus that is responsible for the infection is similar to the fungus that causes the athlete’s foot. The most common type of fungus that causes nail fungus infection is the dermatophytes though this may also be caused by yeast and molds.
6More Causes and Risks
Nail fungal infections are common. They are more prevalent among those who are older, have diabetes, blood circulation problems, a weak immune system, and a family history of nail fungus. Onychomycosis affects the fingernails more than the toenails. Some practices may also contribute to the proliferation of the fungus. These include walking barefoot in damp public areas like swimming pools, changing rooms, and even gyms; sharing personal items like manicure and pedicure tools and towels, wearing closed-toe shoes for a prolonged period; and many others.
