Toenail fungus is a widespread fungal infection that more commonly affects the toenails although the same fungus may also infect fingernails. This nail infection is also known as onychomycosis. The infection occurs when the fungi get in between the nail and the nail bed, which is made possible by a cut or crack in the toes.
Toenail fungus is a common condition that affects older people more. It is also more prevalent among men.
5What are the causes?
More than one type of fungi may affect toenails, the most common of which are those that are known as dermatophytes. Yeasts and molds may also cause nail fungus infections. Dermatophytes are microorganisms and they are not visible to the naked eye.
A person who has the following conditions is more prone to getting infected: diabetes, a blood circulation disorder, a weakened immune system, athlete’s foot, or a nail injury.
