Toenail fungus is a common infection. It is also known as onychomycosis. The most obvious symptom of the infection is discoloration of the nails. It turns brown, white, or yellow. It may start in one toenail and spread to other nails. In the long run, it will cause the nail to become thick and crumble. Some people may think that toenail fungus infection is merely a cosmetic issue, but the toenail fungus can be quite painful and inhibiting some actions.
Physicians usually recommend the use of prescription oral antifungals such as fluconazole (Diflucan) and terbinafine (Lamisil) as nail fungus treatment. These are effective, but they are not without side effects which may vary from upset stomach, dizziness, jaundice, to skin problems.
It’s a good thing that there are many home remedies as alternatives to these prescription medications. One of these is oregano oil.
7Oregano Oil and Its Properties

Oregano oil contains a special antibacterial and antifungal ingredient known as thymol. It has a great role to play in fighting toenail fungus. For treating toenail fungus, dab the affected nail with oregano oil with the help of a cotton swab. Some people treat toenail fungus infection with oregano oil and tea tree oil. These two substances are potent and may bring about irritation or an allergic reaction. With the combined potency of the substances, there is an increased risk of adverse reactions.
Oregano oil also has carvacrol. Carvacrol and thymol are phenols that have been observed to be effective in preventing the growth of dermatophytes and Candida albicans. Both phenols are powerful antimicrobials as well. Several people have seen them as being more effective than prescribed medications.
