Nail fungal infections are common infection that affects both the fingernails and toenails. The fungus causes nail thickening and unpleasant-looking nails that can be painful sometimes. Some treatments can be used for this condition but it has to be taken for several weeks.
14Causes
Infection occurs if there is a fungal overgrowth in your body. The most common group of fungi that causes this condition is dermatophytes. It’s the same group that causes ringworm, athlete’s foot, and jock itch.
A person has an increased risk of developing the infection if you have the following medical conditions: diabetes, psoriasis, poor blood circulation, a weak immune system, or being in a poor state of health like excessive alcohol intake.
A damaged nail is also more prone to infection. It’s the same thing when one is a smoker.
