Toenail fungal infection is one of the different fungal skin or nail infections. The other infections include yeast infection, ringworm, tinea, and jock itch. There are two major causes of skin and nail fungal infections. These are dermatophytes and yeast. Yeast infections that affect the skin and nails of the toes and fingers are caused by the organism known as Candida albicans. These are found on our skin and don’t bother us, except when they multiply and cause a yeast infection. Yeast infections of the nails are characterized by pain and swelling. They may also cause the nail to separate from the nail bed. Dermatophytes, on the other hand, are fungi that feed off dead tissue, such as the nails as well as dead skin cells. This type of infection can be characterized by a round and scaly rash and at times these may include blisters. When dermatophytes cause an infection on the nails, the nails become thick, dull, may split, and eventually fall off.

6Typical Symptoms of Nail Fungus Infections

The nails whether on the toes or fingers when infected by the fungus can become thick, brittle, ragged, distorted, dull, crumbly on the edges, and they may also become yellowish or darker in color. Other symptoms include scaling underneath the nail, yellow spots at the nail’s bottom, yellowish or whitish streaking, and the infected nail may also separate from the nail bed. When the infection gets severe, it may cause pain and emit a foul odor from the infected area.
