Nail fungus, which also goes by the medical name onychomycosis, is a chronic infection that affects the toenails and fingernails. Most of the time, it is caused by dermatophytes, a group of fungi. The condition may also be caused by yeasts and molds. This ultimately leads to the destruction of the nail plate when this is left untreated. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the fungus is more likely to affect the toenails than fingernails.
8How common is it?
Nail fungus infections are very common. Half of the population of those who are 70 years old and older are affected by this. Fifty percent of all nail diseases are attributed to nail fungus.
