Fungal nail infections are formed when fungi attack the nail. Nail fungal infection comprises most of the nail disorders. It occurs mostly in the toenails, but it can also affect the fingernails. Another term for nail fungal infections is onychomycosis.
Causes and Risk Factors
There are various types of microorganisms that can cause a nail fungal infection. The most common of these is the group of fungi known as dermatophytes. It is followed by yeasts and molds. Fungal nail infections may also be caused by an infection of the surrounding skin. Most often, nail fungal infection is linked to athlete’s foot.
A person is more at risk of getting infected when he or she has diabetes, a blood circulation disorder, or a weakened immune system. Walking barefoot in public areas like public pools and changing rooms as well as using tools that are not sanitized or sharing personal items like nail clippers may increase the risk of infection.
There are several common symptoms of a nail fungal infection. These include nail thickening, distortion of shape, discoloration, and crumbling. The skin that surrounds the nail may also become thick and scaly. The infection may occur on different areas of the nail. It may infect first the side and tip. In some cases, the top part of the nail becomes covered with white marks. In very rare instances, the base of the nail may be affected.
The type of nail fungus treatment depends on several factors such as the severity of the infection, the organism that caused it, medications taken, and preference of the patient. When several nails are affected, prescription oral medications work well. When only a few nails are affected, topical treatments may be applied to the nail directly. Treatment often lasts several months since nails grow slowly. Sometimes when the infection is too stubborn, nail removal may be advised.
