Toenail fungus infection is a common nail infection that affects the toenails. It affects the fingernails less commonly. Its medical name for this is onychomycosis. Toenail fungus occurs when fungi get in between the toenail and the toenail bed or the tissue right under the toenail. Most of the time, this happens when fungi get through a crack or cut in the toe.
