The most common cause of nail fungal infections is dermatophytes, which is a group of fungi. These can be found in the hair, nails, and skin. Nail fungal infections may also be caused by yeasts and molds.

Instead of using over-the-counter medications, the doctor may prescribe oral antifungals such as itraconazole, terbinafine, griseofulvin, and fluconazole. The doctor may also prescribe other antifungal medications like nail lacquer that can be brushed on the nail like regular nail polish. This kind of nail fungus treatment may last for several weeks to a year.
