Nail fungal infections are common conditions. This affects 10 percent of the adult population. This percentage becomes higher in the elderly population. Nail fungal infections which are also known as onychomycosis can be challenging to cure. Various types of fungi can cause infection. Each one brings about a different set of symptoms. The infection may occur as white spots or streaks on the nail’s surface.

Causes

The most common cause of nail fungal infections is dermatophytes, which is a group of fungi. These can be found in the hair, nails, and skin. Nail fungal infections may also be caused by yeasts and molds.

Symptoms

A nail fungal infection may affect a part of or the entire nail and even several nails. The most common signs of nail fungal infections include the following: a brittle or crumbly nail, a discolored nail, a foul odor coming from the infected nail, and a misshapen nail that may lift off the nail bed.

Diagnosis

Other types of infections have the same symptoms as nail fungal infections. That is why it is necessary to seek a diagnosis from a doctor. More often, the doctor may require a lab test to determine the microorganism that caused the infection.

Treatments

Instead of using over-the-counter medications, the doctor may prescribe oral antifungals such as itraconazole, terbinafine, griseofulvin, and fluconazole. The doctor may also prescribe other antifungal medications like nail lacquer that can be brushed on the nail like regular nail polish. This kind of nail fungus treatment may last for several weeks to a year.

5Boosts the Immune System

Fava beans when consumed regularly may help boost the immune system. This is mainly because these are rich in compounds that may increase the body’s antioxidant activities. Antioxidants are crucial to the body’s immune system because they contain free radicals that may result in cell damage and eventually to diseases.

One test-tube study showed that administering extracts from fava beans increased their antioxidant property up to 62.5 percent. Some of its compounds have also been observed to enhance the ability of the potent antioxidant glutathione within the human cells, delaying cell aging.
