Toenail fungus is also known medically as onychomycosis. It is a slow-growing infection that affects the nails and the skin underneath them.
11Causes and Risk Factors
The fungus that brings you athlete’s foot is the same fungus that causes toenail fungal infections. The most common group of fungi that causes these infections is called dermatophytes. Nail fungal infections may also be caused by yeast and molds. Toenail fungal infections can become more prevalent among older men, those with diabetes and a weakened immune system as well as blood circulation disorders. It is also common among those who walk barefoot in damp public areas like swimming pools and locker rooms. The infection can be easily spread through sharing personal items like manicure and pedicure tools and towels. Prolonged wearing of tight shoes may also result in nail fungal infections.
