Fungal nail infection happens when the nail is invaded by fungus. It is one of the most common conditions of the nail among adults. It often affects the toenails more than the fingernails. Fungal nail infection is also called onychomycosis. Fungi may attack the nails through small cuts in the skin that surrounds the nails or through a space between the nail and the nail bed. If you are healthy in general, a toenail fungal infection won’t be a concern. However, it can make your nails look bad and painful. It can also ruin your nail or nail bed. A toenail fungus infection may lead to serious complications when the infected person has diabetes or a weakened immune system.

6What can cause a toenail fungal infection?

Fungal nail infections can be caused by molds, yeast, and different types of fungi. Most of these are brought about by the same fungus that causes an athlete’s foot. Fungi easily thrive in a warm and moist environment. They can spread from one person to another. You can easily get a nail fungal infection when you walk barefoot in damp public areas like a swimming pool, gym, or locker room. The infection may also be incurred when you share personal items like nail clippers and towels with other people. When you suffer from an athlete’s foot, the fungus may spread from your skin to your nail.
