Toenail fungus is also known as onychomycosis. It is an infection found underneath the nail. This is caused by fungi. When these microorganisms reign, the nail becomes darker and brittle. When this infection is ignored, the infection may spread and this may hinder you to walk or wear shoes. This is because the nail has become thicker and hard to trim. Onychomycosis can also be accompanied by a yeast infection or secondary bacterial infection in or around the affected nail.
4What are the usual symptoms of a nail fungus infection?
Toenail fungus can alter the appearance of nails in many ways. The toenails may become white, yellow, or brown. It may become chalky or cloudy in some areas of the nail. The nail also starts to thicken which makes it more difficult to trim. It is possible for the nail to separate from the nail bed and a space appears in between the infected nail and the skin underneath it. You may also find some cracks and breaks in one or more spots on the nail. The infected nail can become unsightly, but it isn’t painful usually unless it becomes severe.
