Toenail fungal infection is a common foot health condition. Most of those who suffer from it don’t look for treatment because they are not aware of its existence in the first place. A reason for this is that the infection may have been present for years without causing any disturbance. This becomes more prevalent among older men.

Causes

This toenail fungus infection may be caused by a spread of a fungal nail infection. An example of this is an athlete’s foot. The fungus may spread from the skin towards the toenails if it is not treated properly. Fingernail infection may occur after a toenail infection. If you frequently wash your hands you also become more prone to a nail fungal infection. This is so because the protective skin at the base of the nail may be removed by constant washing.

A nail fungal infection is commonly caused by a group of fungi known as dermatophytes, but it may also be caused by yeasts or molds. You have an increased risk of getting infected when you have diabetes, poor blood circulation, and a weak immune system.

Symptoms

The nail that is infected by fungus appears thick and discolored. It is sometimes painful. The reason for people to see their doctor is that they don’t like the appearance of their nails. Sometimes the entire nail falls off. Sometimes the nail becomes hard or too soft and brittle. The surrounding skin may also become red and swollen. When the infection is left untreated, the fungus may destroy the nail and nail bed.

Treatments

Antifungal tablets prescribed by the doctor may be able to clear out a fungal nail infection. This type of nail fungus treatment may also treat an associated fungal skin infection. A nail lacquer that has the antifungal medicine amorolfine is an alternative treatment for all fungus types that cause the infection. When other types of treatments fail, a minor operation of removing the nail may be advised.
