A nail fungal infection is an infection of both the fingernails and toenails that is caused by fungus. This fungal infection may also be called onychomycosis. This condition affects everyone but older men are more vulnerable to it.

12What are the causes of a nail fungus infection?

A nail fungus infection results from an overgrowth of a fungus. Fungus grows in a dark and wet environment which is the same environment you have in your socks. It can enter through a crack in your nail. The most common group of fungi that causes nail fungus infection is called dermatophytes. The same fungus also causes ringworm, jock itch, and athlete’s foot.

Some habits and conditions may also increase the chances of getting infected. These include having diabetes, blood circulation disorders, a weakened immune system, an athlete’s foot, and a nail injury. Some personal habits may also enhance the likelihood of getting infected with the fungus. These include wearing artificial nails, walking barefoot in damp public areas, wearing closed-toe shoes for a prolonged period, and others.
