Toenail fungal infections can be harmful, but doctors don’t want people to ignore these. Apart from the usual bumps and bruises on the nails, one of the most common problems with toenails is nail fungus infections. Whether we like it or not, we live in the midst of microorganisms and these include molds and yeast. Most of the time these organisms don’t cause trouble. But some of them tend to overgrow, causing an infection and a lot of symptoms.
7What is a toenail fungus?
Toenail fungus infection is also known as onychomycosis. This is the umbrella term for a number of microorganisms that may infect one or more toenails. This is according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The infection is often caused by a superficial cut, opening, or crack near the toenail. Through these the fungus can get in and spread, resulting in an infection. The infections may range from mild to severe. This may affect several nails and may sometimes cause pain.
